Chili Cheese Dogs

I’ve made regular chili plenty of times, but I've always wanted to make hot dog chili. The chili I usually make is too chunky for hot dogs. It just falls off when every time I try to take a bite. Kim, Cassie's mom, told me about this recipe that she saw on Tyler's Ultimate. It was a chili specifically made for putting on hot dogs. How awesome. Cassie went to a baby shower last Friday so I decided to test it out.

It wasn't what I expected. Some of the main ingredients are meat, ketchup and mustard. I thought it would have been good because ketchup and mustard are my usual hot dog topper and the adding meat is just a no brainer. The problem is it was waaaaaaay too ketchupy   (that’s a word, right?).

I will probably make it again, but cut the amount of ketchup. Or I will just look for a different one. I guess we'll see what happens when the time comes.

One thing he does is boil the hot dogs first and then put it on a hot grill. This method gets the hot dog heated up fully and then you add it to the grill to give it a nice crust. I will be using this method again.

P.S. I wasn't planning on making this my blog entry, but I took a few pictures anyway. It turns out I didn’t make anything else so the pictures I have aren't that good.

Here is the recipe taken from Tyler Florence.

Ingredients
  • 1/4 cup extra-virgin olive oil
  • 1 medium onion, chopped
  • 1 pound lean ground beef
  • 1 cup ketchup
  • 1 teaspoon chili powder
  • 1 tablespoon prepared yellow mustard
  • Kosher salt and freshly ground pepper
  • 4 all beef hot dogs, about 1/2 pound
  • 4 hot dog rolls
  • 1/2 cup shredded Cheddar
  • Pickled Jalapenos (I added this one)
Directions
  1. In a skillet, over a medium flame, cook the onion with a little bit of oil.
  2. After about 5 mins, add the meat and cook until it is browned.
  3. Mix in the ketchup, chili powder and mustard and let simmer for 15 mins.
  4. Boil a pot of water and then add the hot dogs for about 5 mins
  5. Heat up your grill or grill pan then put the hot dogs on it. You can also put the buns on so they get heated up/ crispy.
  6. Now it’s time to put it all together: On the bun stack the hot dog, then the jalapenos (dooo iiiiit), the cheese, the chili and then more cheese (I added the extra cheese too)
